Innovation at CSI

The recent Kaikoura Earthquakes have accelerated the amount of investigation required on the structural elements of buildings and the various building systems used in them, which are often unique to New Zealand.

CSI has had existing concerns over early pre-cast flooring systems and their implementation for some time, these concerns have now been justified by the increasing number of poor results from recent assessments.

This particular issue along with various queries received by CSI, have led the team to research innovative technologies that may efficiently and cost-effectively deliver solutions to clients.

CSI are looking to find answers for gathering reliable data on the following issues we have seen including:

  • Wall thickness; particularly loss of material on in-service concrete pipes.
  • Confirmation of seal location for pipes.
  • Accurate detection of honey-combing, delamination, voids and cracks.
  • Establishing whether tendon ducts are grout filled or voided.
  • Establishing whether there are voids behind tunnel linings and slabs.

As long as there is no readily available technology in New Zealand to meet the commercial needs and health and safety requirements of our clients it is important that there is continuous innovation to find solutions to them.
